Turn off the water main. You should find it at the front border of your property near the water meter. Water can do a lot of damage in a short space of time, so the quicker you can stop the flow, the better. If you can, turn on an outside tap so that water left in your lines drains outside instead of inside the house. Follow these steps now!
If you smell gas, turn off all gas appliances and pilot lights. Next, turn off your supply at the gas meter. This is usually found in a metal box attached onto the side of your house; commonly opposite the driveway or in your front garden. To turn off, rotate the valve 90 degrees so that it reaches a horizontal position. Open all doors and windows for ventilation and call Blue Diamond Plumbing to repair the gas leak and relight appliances.
Your homeowners insurance policy may cover plumbing damage if it was sudden and accidental. However, gradual damage from old appliances, rusted pipes or tree roots is not generally covered as these problems could have been avoided with regular maintenance.
